Scott Speed, whose racing experience includes all three NASCAR national series and Formula One, was in the Atlanta area Wednesday, July 24, to promote SYLVANIA Silverstar ® zXe Global Rallycross Atlanta, which will be held Aug. 10 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Speed raced against local media members at Andretti Indoor Karting & Games in Roswell on Wednesday in addition to previewing the GRC event with local news outlets. Speed also conducted a brief Q&A session with children at the Ultimate Race Kamp, a summer camp held at Andretti.

The California native provided a preview of SYLVANIA Silverstar ® zXe Global Rallycross Atlanta for those in attendance not familiar with the thrilling excitement of GRC racing. The GRC race format consists of heat racers, a last chance qualifier race and a final race with the top finishers from each preliminary event.

The inaugural event at AMS will combine action sports, short track racing and motocross with racing taking place on a course made up of dirt, asphalt, gravel, water and ramp jumps.

“For the cars to be able to do what they do, jump and accelerate, it’s pretty impressive to see on just on its own right,” Speed said. “Then, if you add in the type of racers we have in the series and the format with it being a sprint race and such a shootout, it breeds a lot of unknown. It is extremely exciting.”

Speed, who also currently competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, won the first GRC race of the season at the X-Games in Brazil. The race was Speed’s first in a GRC car.

“You don’t ever expect to be able to jump into something and win on your first try, especially when you have never driven the car before or anything like it,” Speed said. “As soon as I sat in the car, it fit my driving style. (With) the way I see corners, it was a good fit. I still have lots to learn about the series and those cars, but it is certainly something that was a natural fit.”
