driver admitted two days before making his 809th -- and last --
Winston Cup start. |

2001: The Wing's the Thing
When the rear
wing failed on his U.S. Army-backed Top Fueler at nearly 300 mph
during qualifying at the NHRA’s recent Memphis Motorsports Park
event, Tony Schumacher went for one of the more violent rides in
recent memory. Just as he posted a 4.611 secs at 296.44 mph pass
in his last attempt of the day, Schumacher’s wing broke away and
the car veered almost head on into the right side guardwall, where
it broke apart and hurtled the driver compartment up and over the
wall. |
