SYLVANIA Silverstar zXe Global Rallycross Atlanta debuted GRC Lites and GRC SuperCars this afternoon at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Toomas Heikkinen won his fifth consecutive GRC SuperCar race and extended his points lead for the GRC championship. Tanner Foust finished in second place after he lost a tire late in the race.
“Once I got the flat tire, that was that, said Foust. “I’ll take second place, but they were really good points.”
After Foust fell back, it allowed Heikkinen to put distance between himself and the field for the win. Starting from the back row, Sverre Isachsen weaved through the field to finish in third.
In the Last Chance Qualifier, Dave Mirra jumped out to a large lead and held on for the top Last Chance Qualifying spot. Timur Timerzaynov and Isachsen also advanced to the final as they finished in the top three.
In the Global Rallycross Lites division, Joni Wiman picked up the win. In a furious battle for second place, Mitchell de Jong edged out Sebastian Eriksson. De Jong was in third for much of the race before he slipped past Erikson on the final turn and down the straightaway.
After practice and seeding divisions were drawn, GRC Lites and SuperCar began elimination heats with the top two finishers advancing to the final rounds. A Last Chance Qualifier added two more drivers to the final. Nine drivers competed in the final races.
Fans were also treated to an afternoon of entertainment in the Fan Zone that included a NOPI car show featuring close to 100 vehicles, an appearance by Miss Alabama 2012 Katherine Webb and Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Rev It Up Crew.
