The side-by-side thrilling action of lawnmower racing will add to the motorsports lore at Atlanta Motor Speedway April 26-27 during the Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama presented by Classic Collectors Insurance & zMAX.
Lawnmower racing events will be part of vast array of spectator events for visitors of all ages to see on a specially crafted course located in the Atlanta Motor Speedway infield during Motorama.
Nearly 60 lawnmowers are expected to race at Motorama in 11 different classes with racers coming from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and as far north as Maryland. Drivers competing in lawnmower racing give spectators various options to cheer for. The age of drivers ranges from kids to adults aged in their sixties, according to James Maurice, president of the Georgia Lawnmower Racing Association.
Although racing lawnmowers may look like typical yard-cutting machines, that is not the case. They’re modified to compete in races and therefore unable to cut grass as each mower retains its frame and engine before being customized for racing.
“It’s a family-friendly sport. My wife and my kids love going to it,” Maurice said. “Once people see it, they’re hooked on it.”
Lawnmower racing events will take place near turn three of Atlanta Motor Speedway on both days of Motorama. There will be multiple opportunities both days to view lawnmower-racing events. Practice sessions are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday with heat races at noon and feature events scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Three separate exhibition races are also scheduled for Sunday of Motorama at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m.
Motorama spectator admission is $12 per day. Kids ages 6 through 11 will be admitted for $5, with kids 5 and under being admitted free.
