Last month, in the season opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Kitzmiller skillfully navigated multiple multicar accidents in the Chili’s Ride the ‘Dente 200, securing a career-best third-place finish.
With one race down and 19 to go, Kitzmiller and his Statesville, N.C.-based team now shift their focus to Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway for Friday night’s General Tire 150, aiming for another strong result in his track debut.
“Other than winning at Daytona, I couldn’t be happier with how our ARCA Menards Series season has started,” said Kitzmiller. “Mother Nature threw us a curveball by canceling practice on Thursday, which meant the field was set by points.
“Even though we were starting midpack, I knew we had a strong drafting car. Thankfully, we avoided the wrecks and put ourselves in a position to win. We came up just short, but we know we have a good superspeedway car for Talladega next month. For now, we’ve been able to put all our focus on Phoenix.”
In January, Kitzmiller and his family-owned team, which has close ties to NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series organization CR7 Motorsports, announced their intent to run for the ARCA Menards Series driver’s championship this season.
With his first career top-five finish under his belt, Kitzmiller is in a strong position in the standings and hopes to capitalize on that momentum all the way to the season finale at Toledo Speedway in October.
“With such a big field at Daytona, if you run into trouble early and finish at the back, it’s really tough to recover in the points race,” Kitzmiller added. “It’s possible, but it takes a lot of work and pressure. Thankfully, we left Daytona in a good place, and now we have to use that to our advantage.
“Phoenix will be a challenge, but I trust my team and my spotter to guide me. If we can leave with back-to-back top-10 finishes to start the year, that would be huge.”
With 150 laps ahead in the Arizona desert, Kitzmiller is preparing for his 29th career ARCA start despite having no prior experience at the 1.0-mile oval. However, the Petersburg, W.Va., native has been utilizing every available resource to get up to speed.
“We’re relying heavily on our relationship with CR7 Motorsports this weekend,” Kitzmiller explained.
“Even though my crew chief, Frank Kimmel, has years of racing experience, Phoenix is a new track for him. Thankfully, the CR7 team has a great track record there, and they’ve provided valuable support.
“I’ll use practice and qualifying to get comfortable and start as close to the front as possible. From there, we’ll stay patient and execute in the second half of the race.
“If we can leave Phoenix with another top-five or top-10 finish, it’ll feel like a win for us.”
