Four-time NASCAR champion conquers mandatory grid inversion to win back-to-back feature races in landmark series revival.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 22, 2026) — Motorsport legend Jeff Gordon delivered a masterclass performance on the streets surrounding the National Mall on Saturday, sweeping both 10-lap feature races to officially capture the 2026 International Race of Champions (IROC) title at the Freedom 250 race weekend held on the street’s of the nation’s capital.
Gordon opened the event with a calculated victory in Race 1, stalking open-wheel star Helio Castroneves before executing a decisive pass for the lead on Lap 6. Due to IROC’s mandatory full-grid inversion rules, Gordon’s victory relegated him to the very back of the starting lineup for Race 2, putting his championship hopes to the test against an elite field of racing champions.
Gordon systematically carved through traffic in the second race, climbing from the tail end of the field to pass Tony Kanaan for the lead on Lap 5. He then held off a fierce final-lap charge from runner-up Kurt Busch to complete the sweep and lock up the championship.
“To win on a street circuit against this caliber of drivers is incredible, but coming from the back after the invert makes this weekend unforgettable,” said Gordon. “IROC has always brought out the absolute best in motorsports, and adding a D.C. sweep to a history that started for me back at Daytona in 1998 brings everything full circle.”
Despite Castroneves setting the fastest final lap of Race 2 at 1:13.764, Gordon’s track position and defense secured the double victory and the overall crown.
